"In some ways, I think travel is about learning how to see, learning how to pay attention. It's an alarm clock in some ways, and it's a jumpstart to putting our senses on the setting where they're universally receptive. I think theoretically we could do that at our homes, and yet somehow, surrounded by familiarity and the routine we know too well, our eyes tend to close and we don't notice the things that are so wondrous for a visitor. But as soon as we physically start moving we awaken to the beauties around us." --Pico Iyer

Driving around Aus - Moree to Melbourne

January 10th 2008 01:23
Continuining on our little journey we make our way down toward Melbourne with a stop in Dubbo. I have heard this name thrown around delicately and smashed against a wall so it would be interesting to have a first hand account of the place. What really drew my attention was the 'Western Plains Zoo'. With all due respect to the animals of Australia I am longing to see some with a bit of grunt, which this place promises to offer - elephants, giraffe, lions... you name it! I`m not a fan of the zoo idea, but here the animals roam free in grassy plains. I would just like to know how you ride or walk around a park that contains elephants, lions and cheetah. I would most definitely NOT recommend that on a visit to an African park!

For a more cultural encounter, a visit to the Terramungamine-Rock Carvings looks worth the visit. Used as a meeting place by the local Tubbagah People, the site proudly boasts 150 rock carvings.

A visit of the Dubbo Tourist information site (link provided above) reveals many more activities to keep the majority of travellers happy for a few days at least!

After all that driving it may be a good idea to stop off in Wagga Wagga to take a stroll along the 30km Wiradjuri Walking track, following the footsteps of this great tribe. Although the name of the place, coming from the Wiradjuri word for crow and translating into place of many crows, doesnt sound too exciting they have a little gem of a place which really reveals how big a nerd I am! The Australian Pen Museum is located here and houses some of the country's oldest quills dating back to 1828. Just imagine what was written by those nibs....

After all that excitement of lions, rock carvings and ancient quills I would suggest pulling over for a well deserved bit of R & R. We will get to Melbourne next time!

Boney M to visit Sunshine Coast

October 8th 2007 22:20
The 1970`s band Boney M are due to play at the Maroochy RSL this Wednesday 10th October. Apparently there are two of the original band members who have reformed the group, touring to play old favourites like 'Ma Baker', 'Daddy Cool', 'Brown Girl in the Ring' and 'By the Rivers Of Babylon'. If interested get your bubblegum ready, your dancing shoes on and be there for the 7pm start! Here are some tunes to get you in the groove...

What better way is there to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon than taking a drive through the Hinterland. Located an hour North of Brisbane is Queensland`s Sunshine Coast - a pure feast for the eyes and tickle of the adventurers taste buds

Another day in Sydney

January 1st 2007 21:12
It is time to get up early and hit the city streets once again. The markets are already in full swing at Kings Cross, get lost in the noise and people as you search for a gift or two.

A whirl through Sydney

January 1st 2007 07:38
Arriving in Sydney is always a good experience. Heading out to sea to come back in to the airport you have a clear view of the harbour and Opera House down below as well as the jagged cliffs that stretch out along the coast line in either direction. The city itself is beautiful especially at night time, with the enormous buildings all lit up and the different coloured light displays that reflect off the Opera House and Harbour Bridge

Woodford Folk Festival

December 26th 2006 08:48
Tomorrow, 27th December, marks the start of the Woodford Folk Festival on Australia`s Sunshine Coast. I have never been so cannot give a first hand account of it, but I have heard so much about it this year I thought I would give it a try.
There seems to be a really good line up or artists and bands from around the world and the website offers some great photos and accounts of the whole experience it sounds like it is going to be a great time. I know that we need the rain, but that is going to make it even more interesting, especially when it comes to the camping bit! I have never tested our new tent in the rain and I did not really think to ask about it being waterproof (DUH!!!!) so we could be sleeping in the car if it isn`t!
If you have ever been I would love to hear what you thought of it. If you are on the Sunshine Coast and a little lost about what to do besides twiddle your thumbs and wait for New Year why not give this a go. You can check out the website here to get a better idea if you are interested.

Brisbane by Night

December 19th 2006 10:35

Brisbane, or any city really, comes to life at night. The lights transform the city into a totally different place and Brisbane is fortunate to have its changing face reflected in the curving waters of the Brisbane River that winds its way through the buildings

Robbie Williams to marry?

December 13th 2006 00:40
Yes girls, Robbie fever has hit Brisbane this week with his first show tonight. But what is most important is that tomorrow night WHEN I AM THERE and our eyes meet in the crowd he will be unable to control himself and will get down on one knee and propose instantly. I have put a lot of thought into this and marriage is such a big step, but I do feel that he will be able to provide well for my children and give me the sort of life that I should be accustomed to.
Is it those boyish good looks? Is it the charm? Is it that bad boy attitude? hhmmmm he is so good at all of them it is difficult to choose.
Have fun to all of you who will be there, I know I sure will. And when I wake with a bump and realise that my wedding has all been a dream I will console myself with re-runs of the DVD whilst snuggling in authentic concert T-shirt and cap and sipping my can of vodka premix from my Robbie stubbie cooler and crying over the phone on my limited edition Robbie mobile...not that I`m an obessed fan or anything!

Work your way around Aus

November 24th 2006 02:32

So you have arrived here and now the search for work begins. This is not the easiest thing to do, especially if you are wanting to something other than fruit picking or call centre work. For those of you who want some pub work and are in Western Australia why not try being a barmaid in a country pub

U2 are in Australia

November 8th 2006 11:22
If you haven`t already got your ticket and you can lay your hands on one make sure you do! I was lucky enough to be in Brisbane last night for the first show of their Australian tour and it was as good as it gets.
Kanye West rocked the stadium to get everyone in party mode. What would any stadium experience be without the good old Mexican Wave? One adventurous guy in the Mosh Pit started it off and before long the whole crowd was joining in - a sea of hands rippling through the stands. When Bono walked on stage, looking as cool as ever in his black leather and shades, you couldn`t hear yourself think over the screams. The woman next to us looked like she would pass out as she jumped up and down and tears sprung to her eyes almost immediately.
I think the most impressive part of the show was when all the stadium lights were switched off and Bono asked everyone to turn on their cellphones and create a stadium of 'stars'. And that was exactly what it looked like looking around at the thousands of people with glowing screens in their hands
