"In some ways, I think travel is about learning how to see, learning how to pay attention. It's an alarm clock in some ways, and it's a jumpstart to putting our senses on the setting where they're universally receptive. I think theoretically we could do that at our homes, and yet somehow, surrounded by familiarity and the routine we know too well, our eyes tend to close and we don't notice the things that are so wondrous for a visitor. But as soon as we physically start moving we awaken to the beauties around us." --Pico Iyer

Rainbow Beach

December 10th 2006 00:26
Rainbow Beach - lovely name isn`t it? And so reflected when you get there. I have never driven on the beach before so was a little apprehensive when we arrived (Ok basically we sat at the edge of the beach entrance with me going, "Should we go? What happens if we get stuck? No let`s turn back. Ok no let`s go....") Eventually the engine was roaring and the tyres were gripping firmly on the sand and we were off! And now I have found my new addiction! For those of you who have never tried this before I highly recommend it.

Beach Highway!

There have been 72 different colours of sand that have been found in the cliffs at Rainbow Beach. They are caused by minerals in the sand being exposed to the sea air and changing colour. There is a great Aboriginal story about how they got their colours, you can read it here.

Rainbow Beach

Be aware that when driving on Rainbow Beach the normal rules of the road apply and speed limits are enforced, with police doing random speeding tests. You also want to be careful about driving too fast anyways as the sand can take a little getting used to. Once you are on the beach there are loads of activities to keep you busy for the day. Try some fishing, do some sand tobogganing, check out the wreckage of the Cherry Venture before they move it.
(A little gripe here - this ship wreck has been here for years and now there is talk of it being removed because of publich safety. Well a few months ago a tourist was nearly killed when he fell asleep on the beach and was driven over by a 4x4 - um public safety? Come on!)

So if you are in the area make sure you add Rainbow Beach to your list of must-sees! You are also able to go camping right on the shore, however there are no amenities so make sure you come prepared.

Beaches of Australia

October 21st 2006 07:43

The beaches in Australia are just as diverse as the country itself. I hope to put up lots more. This is the first and was taken at Coolum Beach, Sunshine Coast during the wild storm season of 2005. The beaches had been totally washed away and a thick foam like what you would find on a cuppacino lay there instead.
