Brisbane

November 10th 2006 05:40

Brisbane in line with Queensland, is a very laid back city. Although everyone is in full city mode it is a lot slower than other major cities.
A good starting point on your trip to Brisbane would be to the lookout at Mount Coot-tha. Only a few minutes drive out the city and you have a brids eye view. Look at the lazy curves of the Brisbane river as it winds its way through the buildings and see all the surrounding suburbs over the treetops.

Heading into the city jump aboard one of the City Cats for a bump free ride on the Brisbane River, taking in the sights from the water. On the weekends get off at the Southbank Markets and take a stroll through the stalls before taking a splash in the man-made beach.
There is more to see and do in Brisbane than meets the eye. Check out Brisbane Tourism website at www.ourbrisbane.com for a list of current events and attractions.

Hi Adrian,
Thanks. It`s great wandering around the city with camera in hand. A great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon with some good reflecting time thrown in for free.

Hey Ash,

I live on the way-outer northern fringes of this great city and couldn't agree with you more... love it. I've lived in Sydney and Canberra and love this place the best... It is one of the most liveable cities I've come across in the world... relaxed and lovely... especially paddington... just exploring it now...

I've been by before... you know.. voting here and there... great stories...
...but thought I'd leave a paw print this time...

Lilla...

Hey Lilla,
Thanks for stopping by. Yes Brisbane is certainly one of those surprising cities. I have lived in loads of cities around the world and Brisbane has a vibe all of its own. It`s clean and funky and easy to walk around rather than having to wrestle others to get trains or buses around the place.
Good luck in your investigations, I hope you find many more surprises on your travels.
Ash

My uncle passed in 1966 in Brisbane. His medals for service over two world wars, were for a time, in the custody of Queensland Public Trustee. They told me of a Cecilia McNally (MBE, who passed in 1996) , apparently a friend of my uncles. they living within
two minutes walk of each other. She evidentially
expressed a desire to avail of my uncle's medals but
never came by their office to collect them so they were sent to the veterans organization R.S.S.A.I.L.A. in the same year of my uncle's death.

Dame Cecelia McNally, I sew a notice by Queensland Irish Association requesting their members attend the funeral of Ms McNally, their late member.

I wonder if my uncle was a member also. I'm trying to learn all I can about my Uncle Jerry who had been lost to our family since after WWII.

Anyone who may have knowledge of my uncle
I would appreciate whatever they might impart.

Thanks. Nephew Denis Riney

I'm seeking whatever I can about an uncle who was lost to our Riney family of Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland. A Wireless Operator, merchant mariner of two world wars.

Wonder in particular, if a viewer who may have been related to or knew Dame Cecelia Elizabeth McNally, and were it so, then based on Dame McNally wanting my Uncle Jeremiah Riney's medals of WWI and WWII and she not coming by the Queensland Public Trustee's office to pick them up in the year of his death 1966. QPT would then send them to RSL a veteran's organization where they thereby went missing. Ms. McNally who called my uncle friend, passed in 1996.
She and my uncle lived within a three minute walk of each other. He
may have been a tenant of hers. I'm seeking to know or find all
I can about a hero uncle. Being of a family of 12 as like uncle's
dad (my grandfather) there are many Rineys out there wondering about
him. A picture would be a welcome discovery as well as finding his
medals, I sense that perhaps his medals may have been picked up indirectly by
Ms. McNally by virtue of my finding that the RSL office his medals were delivered to being close to where she had lived in the Spring Hill area. Again , where she and my uncle lived. His address was then 27 Downing St. around the time of his death on Jan 22, 1966.

I wonder if anyone know how I might gain information about medals that my long
lost uncle had been awarded for his WWI service
in service to Britain.. Australian sources have helped me greatly - not so UK.
-----------
All of his medals have gone missing since being passed by PTQ to RSL in 1966.
----------------------------- -----------
Feb 10, 09 I obtained a description of the medals that he received for his WWII service from the Australian Defence.Gov Directorate site. He was living in Brisbane from 1948 till his death on January 22, 1966. His first sailing was out of Southampton on the Gaika in September 1916.

These are the medals as confirmed by the Directorate that were issued to
Uncle Jeremiah Riney ;

Atlantic Star
Pacific Star
Australia Service Medal 1939-45
War Medal 1939-45
1939-45 Star

Thanks in advance for any help you may offer.

Sincerely,

Denis Riney

Nudgee Manager is assisting me with erection of a
headstone over my uncle's resting place. Payment
made in advance in Nov 2008 and now Feb 2009 the
work is slated for completion this month Feb 2009.

I have great faith in a construct meeting my specs
to be visible to those who enter the beautiful Catholic Cemetery that is Dudgee, within a forthnight.
