"In some ways, I think travel is about learning how to see, learning how to pay attention. It's an alarm clock in some ways, and it's a jumpstart to putting our senses on the setting where they're universally receptive. I think theoretically we could do that at our homes, and yet somehow, surrounded by familiarity and the routine we know too well, our eyes tend to close and we don't notice the things that are so wondrous for a visitor. But as soon as we physically start moving we awaken to the beauties around us." --Pico Iyer

Hunger on the road

October 21st 2006 22:26

It seems in a world gone food mad we often find our little travel vans patiently queuing in some drive thru window of a fast food chain. While in Australia there is no excuse for unhealthy eating. Along most roads around the country where there is a farm there will be a farm stall, and let`s face it there are a lot of farms!

Most of these operated on the honesty system whereby they will leave a box of their wares down at the gate with a price and a money tin. You take what you like and put THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF MONEY into the money tin. In this way you can gorge your faces with fresh and healthy Aussie produce for a fraction of the price that you would pay in the supermarket. Keep the honesty system alive if you are going to buy your food in this way. The farmers toil in hot and horrible conditions to produce the food and it works in the favour of both of you having this option so don`t ruin it for others by stealing. Other farm stalls may be manned in which case you can have a chat with the growers when you make your purchases.
If you are wanting a cooked meal, but don`t want to pay hefty Restaurant prices try and find an RSL (Returned and Services League of Australia) which is an organization supported men and women who are in the Armed Forces. Drinks are VERY cheap and for $10 you can get a really good meal - seafood, chicken, roast dinners etc. These are not budget meals so don`t be put off by their prices. The RSL also provides good entertainment, cheap bars, gambling facilities and much more so make sure you check one out on your stay. (Google RSL and the town you are in to find your nearest one.)

Lastly, try and find out the clearance day at the local supermarket. You will find some great bargains. Meat is generally the most expensive buy so look out for clearance items in this department - normally you will have to use it on that day, but it will cost you far less than if you normally bought it.
