"In some ways, I think travel is about learning how to see, learning how to pay attention. It's an alarm clock in some ways, and it's a jumpstart to putting our senses on the setting where they're universally receptive. I think theoretically we could do that at our homes, and yet somehow, surrounded by familiarity and the routine we know too well, our eyes tend to close and we don't notice the things that are so wondrous for a visitor. But as soon as we physically start moving we awaken to the beauties around us." --Pico Iyer

Drives through the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

July 5th 2007 11:14

What better way is there to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon than taking a drive through the Hinterland. Located an hour North of Brisbane is Queensland`s Sunshine Coast - a pure feast for the eyes and tickle of the adventurers taste buds.

Silent giants reach up to the weeping clouds and catch their tears in their rugged, cupped hands to create beautiful sights like this. Ducks skim along the mirrored surface of the water, shattering the reflected beauty to create a thousand smaller pictures that are sent swirling to the dusty edges.

One can rarely appreciate something fully until they have viewed it from all angles. Climb to where the eagles soar and step to the edge of one of the many lookouts to explore the world below with the eyes of a bird. Watch the light dance along the treetops and explore every leaf and branch that stretches in its protective covering of the world below.

Gather a handful of dandelions and allow your breath to mingle and become one with that of Mother Nature by blowing a hundred little wishes into the air. Make sure you do not spend your entire day viewing the world from the metal box of you car. Get out there, allow the raindrops to kiss your skin and the sun to caress your body.

There is always something to do... even on a rainy day!

Ash,

Sheer joy and beauty, you forgot to pick me up, you must have had a better offer.

You did say soccer, didn't you? Must be a new word for pictures.

I loved the ride, it's not a traveller I would be but I guess I have what's necessary.

Great shots, Ash! Love the sephia-like effects in pix 3 and 6 -- especially 6...
I'll make sure I do that drive when I visit the Sunshine Coast.

Why are there so few people in Australia? Only 20 million in that big place? That's the population of New York State. You must be extremely unfriendly. Why don't you invite some of those people from Asia and Africa to "come on over".
As for the pictures, I guess it looks nice, but to tell you the truth, most of those places look like excellent places to be eaten, or mauled by something or someone.

Hey Jonathon

I heard on the news tonight something about the drought being broken. We haven`t had any rain up on the SUNNY coast in a couple of weeks now... in fact we have had nothing but sunshine.

IT`s WINTER PEOPLE............WE NEED THE COLD!

I bet you are looking forward to coming home now, even if it is difficult to leave.

Lovely photos, Ash. I've been to the Hinterland a few times, mostly on school trips, and it is a stunning area. Your beautiful images make me want to go back again.

Hiya Aimzster

Amazing how you take for granted the places that you have on your doorstep. I have left places and done the whole forehead slapping thing because I haven`t taken advantage of it.

Australia has some really wonderful sights - maybe that`s why it`s so far from anywhere else - because you don`t need to leave it to have a unique experience.

Hope you manage to get up here one day

Hi Katyzzz

Sorry love the mountain solitude. It`s much better when I don`t have to talk to anyone. I talk too much during the week so having a shut mouth for a few hours gives my eyes a chance to see. Next time I will pick you up... just don`t keep me waiting mind you!

Yeah I put it under Soccer on purpose. I`m feeling particularly rebellious... GO ME!

Hi Lara

Thank you... the sepia gives it that surreal touch doesn`t it? It also allows the greens to really show by blocking out the other colour.

I hope you enjoy your drive. There are so many roads around here begging to be explored.

Hi Lilla

ah I went in search of the Monastery a couple of weeks ago - it looks like there are some really great walks around there. Got a little side-tracked in Montville though and never quite made it!

I hope you are up and running again soon. The weeks rest should do the trick hopefully!

Thanks Dusk

you gotta love dandelions don`t you??? I haven`t seen one in a while and was stoked!

yeah these category things drive me nuts. I suppose I should ask for a travel one and be done with it... but soccer seemed as unappropriate as possible.

Hi Howard

hhmmmm interesting comment don`t quite know what to say actually. In my opinion Aussies are very friendly people - I`m not Aussie so it`s not a biased opinion. I`m sure the people in Africa and Asia are pretty happy about where they live and have space GALORE!

As for the pics... sad to hear you have such a critical eye of such a beautiful place. I hope that doesn`t limit you to staying in your 'safety' zone. Perhaps you have a fear of wild, open spaces? Try it sometime you may surprise yourself.

Hi Kylie

It is a very beautiful place. Unfortunately the developers have got their sticky little claws into it and have started to rip it and up and pour concrete all over it. Hopefully the mountains will remain untouched.

hey tracy,

I`m beginning to rediscover that... taking long walks on the beach every night, reading more, writing more with pen and paper... and have now taken on the task of teaching myself to draw!

I have always enjoyed Art but more often than not been disappointed with the results. I have a friend whose husband is an artist and he recommended a great book that I`m going to seek out and get stuck into. I`m still addicted to Orble though!

hope you are well
