"In some ways, I think travel is about learning how to see, learning how to pay attention. It's an alarm clock in some ways, and it's a jumpstart to putting our senses on the setting where they're universally receptive. I think theoretically we could do that at our homes, and yet somehow, surrounded by familiarity and the routine we know too well, our eyes tend to close and we don't notice the things that are so wondrous for a visitor. But as soon as we physically start moving we awaken to the beauties around us." --Pico Iyer

Kuranda Skyrail

January 4th 2007 20:53
Day Two of our Cairns adventure started off rather early too, but without the hangover, so already it was way better! We were headed for the Kuranda Skyrail, which was an amazing trip. To get up there you have to jump on the train which meanders its way up the mountainside, exposing breathtaking scenery on its ascent. At times it was rather hairy going over rickety wooden bridges suspended high over rocky cliffs with waterfalls nearly close enough to touch.

Once you reach the top it is time to jump on board the Skyrail, which is bascially a cable car that takes you back down to sea level again. But this is no ordinary cable car. No this cable car is suspended over the rainforest and glides up mountain tops, skimming the trees and finally descending down with views for miles that actually scare you when you think how high you are! You could hear the birds and monkeys and other various sounds down below and at times we were so high and the trees so tall you couldn`t see where they started.

You can stop off at various points along the way to have a wander through the rainforest which I highly recommend. They sometimes have guides there who are brilliant with their tours - you learn so much more than from just reading the plaques scattered around. The final destination is at the little village of Kuranda. Unfortunately we did not have a lot of time left, but there are various parks and shops to stroll through. The butterfly park looks really well worth the visit...maybe next time!

So if you are up Cairns way I would highly recommend a trip on the Skyrail. Beautiful, scary, eye-opening - what more could you want from a holiday :0)

Hi Ash -

Lovely views and shots. Thanks to Katy and her Dali post, plus your lizard, I decided to visit your site, this one.

We have to common interest - travel and photography, perhaps writing too. ;> I actually wrote an article about the Barrier Reef and Kuranda (ie, featuring both). Unfortunately, my cousin accidentally exposed out film taken inside the Barrier Reef Cruiser so we have no memento left there. Are all these pictures from your camera? They're so lovely, breath-taking.

Cheers,
Tel

Hiya Tel
Thanks for the compliments - for sure those are those my three (main!) passions - writing, travel and photography. Love it!
Ah what a pity about your photos - at least you have the memories safely tucked away in your mind - perhpas try writing about it - you can use your words to conjure up the pictures for everyone else.
I took these when I was up there at the end of 2005 - had a brilliant time would love to go back...just not in December again!
Have a great day

Hi Ash,

That's right, Write! I have few things written, in drafts. Will have to share you some of my shots one day. There you go, we share 3 passions!

My website at inspiredpen.4t.com used to have my own Sydney shots which I featured every month. It became quite tedious, besides I've been side-tracked with blogging, so I no longer have my images uploaded.
Well, hardly. I have one in my Links ~ At Royal Botanical Garden during one of my drifts with a writer-friend from Perth.

By the way, I have some of my own shots of Kuranda similar to yours.

Cheers!
