"In some ways, I think travel is about learning how to see, learning how to pay attention. It's an alarm clock in some ways, and it's a jumpstart to putting our senses on the setting where they're universally receptive. I think theoretically we could do that at our homes, and yet somehow, surrounded by familiarity and the routine we know too well, our eyes tend to close and we don't notice the things that are so wondrous for a visitor. But as soon as we physically start moving we awaken to the beauties around us." --Pico Iyer

Sydney Fish Market

October 29th 2006 23:29

I am a lover of seafood so this is a great afternoon adventure. Jump on the tram and within minutes you are walking into the Fish Markets. Once you get over the smell it`s quite fascinating to see all the weird and wonderful catches displayed on the ice.

Grab yourself a cold brew, get some seafood freshly cooked up and head outside to one of the tables that overlook the harbour. It`s a great way to spend the afternoon.

I love this place, but Im telling you, take a day off work. I always end up having a fight with some random group of asian tourists for a seat on the weekend.

I also had an argument with one of the places there cause I sat on one of their chairs (God forbid!) and I didnt buy food from their shop even though my sister did!

So I stood up and said "If it makes you happy, I'll leave, there are cockraoches in your shop anyways"

Ohhh man... never cross me at the Fish Markets...

Hi PT,

Hi Ash and PT

I love it there too, but it is a bit cut-throat when it comes to getting a seat. People are very protective

Hi Tracy,
Yeah we found that when we were there too. We were lucky because we didn`t have to wait too long before one right on the water was vacated and we could swoop in! It is a pity that they don`t have a larger area because it is not really like you can take your food and sit on the grass nearby somewhere. We did go later in the day though so that was probably why.
Good luck on your next visit!
Ash
