"In some ways, I think travel is about learning how to see, learning how to pay attention. It's an alarm clock in some ways, and it's a jumpstart to putting our senses on the setting where they're universally receptive. I think theoretically we could do that at our homes, and yet somehow, surrounded by familiarity and the routine we know too well, our eyes tend to close and we don't notice the things that are so wondrous for a visitor. But as soon as we physically start moving we awaken to the beauties around us." --Pico Iyer

A whirl through Sydney

January 1st 2007 07:38
Arriving in Sydney is always a good experience. Heading out to sea to come back in to the airport you have a clear view of the harbour and Opera House down below as well as the jagged cliffs that stretch out along the coast line in either direction. The city itself is beautiful especially at night time, with the enormous buildings all lit up and the different coloured light displays that reflect off the Opera House and Harbour Bridge

Bondi Beach

First stop will be Bondi Beach. It is very Med looking with a cove of white sand arcing out against the clearest, bluest water. The surfers look like they are floating on air and the sea weed underneath is luminous green as it shines through from the sea floor. Along the shore are small cafes and in the distance on the opposite side of the bay are all different coloured houses dotted along the cliff side. I love people watching so perhaps a short stop at a shady spot under an umbrella and a frozen fruit juice while watching the world go by is a good way to start the trip. It is hard to believe that only 20 minutes behind us the bustling city of Sydney is hard at work.

Next we can take a wander through the city streets. They are always alive, music tumbling from shop doors and mingling with the general chitter chatter and normal noises of city life. As you meander remember to take a look up - you may catch some pretty interesting sights and reflections in the tall buildings.

Talking of reflections, catch these in the shimmering waters of Darling Harbour. This is the place to be as the sun sets over the city. Let`s jump on a ferry and take a lazy ride around the Harbour. As the daylight fades and turns to night so the city lights begin to blink on and soon the air is alive with colour glows. A great way to end the day. There is so much more to this great city, but this is an adventure for tomorrrow.....
